We don't sell any of these systems and we don't take a referral cut from any of them, so take the following as what it is: the opinion of the people who have to make your choice work on real hardware. All three are good software. They differ mostly in what they ask of the room behind the front desk.
The Three Systems, From an Installer's Chair
Dentrix
Henry Schein One- Hosting model
- On-premise server (Dentrix Ascend is the separate cloud product)
- Server it wants
- Wants a real Windows Server box with SQL underneath. The most demanding of the three on hardware.
- Network demands
- Chatty between workstation and server. Gigabit wired to every operatory matters here — Wi-Fi-only operatories will feel slow at chairside.
- Imaging bridges
- Widest imaging bridge support. Almost any sensor or pan you buy will have a documented Dentrix integration.
- Getting data out
- Moving data out is the hardest of the three. Plan for vendor-assisted conversion if you're leaving it.
Our take: Highest infrastructure cost of the three, and the safest bet for imaging compatibility. If your equipment rep is pushing a specific sensor, this is the one most likely to just work.
Eaglesoft
Patterson Dental- Hosting model
- On-premise server
- Server it wants
- Similar footprint to Dentrix but somewhat more forgiving. Still a dedicated server, still SQL.
- Network demands
- Same story as Dentrix — wire the operatories. Front desk and imaging traffic want to be on separate VLANs.
- Imaging bridges
- Strong bridge support, especially with Patterson-sold equipment, which is often how practices end up here.
- Getting data out
- Comparable to Dentrix. Conversions are usually vendor-run rather than something we do in-house.
Our take: If you bought your chairs and sensors through Patterson, this is frequently the path of least resistance — the equipment and software come from the same place.
Open Dental
Open Dental Software- Hosting model
- On-premise server, or self-hosted on a VPS if you prefer
- Server it wants
- MySQL/MariaDB based and considerably lighter. Runs happily on hardware the other two would struggle on.
- Network demands
- Same wired-operatory advice, but more tolerant of a modest setup. Easier to run well on a smaller budget.
- Imaging bridges
- Good bridge support, though for unusual equipment it's worth confirming before you buy the sensor rather than after.
- Getting data out
- By far the easiest to get data into and out of — the database schema is documented. Lowest lock-in of the three.
Our take: Our usual recommendation for independent practices watching the budget. Lower licensing, lighter server, documented database, and you aren't captive to one vendor.
What Doesn't Change Whichever You Pick
- Wire every operatory anyway. All three are client-server systems that talk to the database constantly. Wi-Fi at chairside is the most common cause of the “our system is so slow” call we get.
- Separate imaging from everything else. Large scans moving across the same flat network as your front desk will make both feel broken. VLANs cost nothing and fix it permanently.
- Confirm the imaging bridge before you buy the sensor. This is the expensive mistake. Sensors are not cheap, and “it integrates” from a sales rep is not the same as a documented bridge for your specific software version.
- Test the restore, not just the backup. A backup nobody has restored from is a hope, not a plan. Whichever database sits underneath, we restore it once with you watching before we call the job finished.
